Department of Health / Ecuador

Savor Saver

For patients undergoing chemotherapy, food often stops tasting like food. The treatment can create a metallic flavor that suppresses appetite, making it harder for patients to get the nutrients they need to stay strong and fight cancer. To help, the Ecuadorian Department of Health developed sugar-free candies made from a wild berry that grows in Ecuador’s coastal region. This berry has the ability to regenerate taste buds, allowing patients to experience the true flavors of food for up to 60 minutes.
